Industrial level measurement plays an essential role in process control, inventory monitoring and safety management. Capacitive level transmitter and radar level transmitter are two widely adopted continuous level measurement instruments. Many process engineers and procurement teams compare these two technologies when designing tank or silo measurement systems. Understanding their working principles, strengths, limitations and typical applications helps users make a proper selection according to field working conditions.
A capacitive level transmitter works based on capacitance variation. The probe and metal tank wall form two plates of a capacitor. When the level rises, the medium replaces air around the probe. Since the dielectric constant of liquid or solid material differs from air, capacitance value changes proportionally with the material height. The electronics convert capacitance signals into standard output for level reading. RF capacitance level transmitter is a common variant of this technology.
This is a contact measurement method. The probe needs direct contact with measured media. It can detect liquid interface between two immiscible liquids with different dielectric properties, which is a notable advantage for some process scenarios. Its measurement stability relies on relatively stable dielectric constant of the measured medium.
Radar level transmitter adopts microwave time-of-flight technology. There are two mainstream types: FMCW radar level transmitter and pulse radar level transmitter. The antenna emits microwave signals towards the material surface. The signal reflects back after hitting the surface. The transmitter calculates distance and level value by measuring round-trip time of microwave.
Radar level measurement belongs to non-contact level measurement. The antenna does not touch liquid, powder or slurry inside the vessel. Measurement results are less affected by medium viscosity, pressure or temperature fluctuation within rated ranges.
Capacitive level transmitter delivers reliable measurement under stable medium conditions. If the dielectric constant changes due to composition, moisture or temperature shift, reading drift may occur and recalibration will be required.
Radar level transmitter provides higher measurement accuracy. Its performance remains steady even when process turbulence exists. Accuracy is not subject to medium dielectric constant variation as strongly as capacitive instruments.
Capacitive level transmitter fits liquids, granular solids and powder materials. With PTFE coated probes, it can work for corrosive media. It performs well for liquid interface measurement. It is less ideal for media with low or unstable dielectric constant.
Radar level transmitter supports most liquids, slurries and bulk solids. It adapts to high-temperature, high-pressure tanks. Heavy foam or heavy internal obstructions may create false echoes and affect signal quality for some radar models.
Capacitive level transmitter is commonly used for short and medium range tank level measurement. Long probes may bring signal attenuation issues.
Radar level transmitter supports much longer measuring ranges, which makes it suitable for tall silos and large outdoor storage tanks.
Capacitive level transmitter has simple structure. Installation is straightforward. However, medium coating or buildup on the probe will influence measurement, so regular inspection and cleaning may be needed.
As non-contact equipment, radar level transmitter has no probe immersed into media. It reduces risks of corrosion and material buildup. It generally requires less routine maintenance. Users need to consider antenna type and vessel internal obstacles during installation.

Capacitive level transmitter is a practical choice for short-range measurement, liquid interface detection and stable media. Field working conditions should always be the primary consideration when picking continuous level measurement instruments. Evaluating medium features, vessel structure and accuracy requirements helps select the proper industrial level sensor and 4-20mA level transmitter for tank level measurement.
